Indian telcos always boast about their plans to penetrate into the villages and provide full network out there. They also consider these regions as the future of the Indian telecom market as the major chunk of users hail from these areas. But the real scenario seems a contrast to their claims. Read on to know what Mr. Mohan has gone through.

Hello sir, I am Mohan in Tamil Nadu, Erode district, Gobi Taluk, Getticheviyur. Pin no:638110. My mobile no:9#########. We have problems in NETWORK COVERAGE in my village other than airtel towers are there. I give complaints many more times by customer care. But still no steps are to be taken. The call is disconnected because network problems. One point only in my mobile. Here 75 customers. please put TOWER in our village. We agree that you take steps immediately. Kindly response our complaint.
Thank you.

We are not here to judge the grammatical errors this person may have done but the crux of the matter is that companies are not fulfilling their boasted claims. Operators need to step up and be proactive rather than playing the waiting game. After all, rural area customers are what every operator is eyeing on.

In one of the posts, TeleGyaan blogged about the BPL Gallery – Andheri(W). We gave it a fair rating on its service, but one of our readers did not agree to what we said in the post.

This reader is Mr. Nilesh, who wanted to get a prepaid connection from the same gallery. His experience wasn’t great because of the reasons he gave us:

“I have sent all the documents, which were necessary to get the connection.

I received the Sim card

Two days later the connection was cut and a I got a request to submit the documents.”

This is a good example of Bad Service. We request readers to send us such queries and problems so that we can uncover such practices and have some say in the matter.

As for Nilesh, we would advice you to contact the Gallery and get the problem sorted. If you have already done that, and since it involves important papers, you could click here and get your complaint lodged.

It’s Saturday and we are proud to have another TeleGyaan reader to have his plan reviewed. This week it is Madhav S from Karnataka reviewing his Spice Postpaid 175 Plan. The basic reason to choose this plan was the low rental with free calls and SMS’s. As such the benefits that one gets are more than the rent paid for this plan.

The rental is Rs.200 per month, including Rs. 25 as CLIP charges. The benefits that you get are:

200 mins of free calling to Local Spice numbers

100 mins of free calling to Local mobile phones

50 local SMS’s free

The calling rates are 50paise, 80 paise and Rs.1.5 to Spice, other networks and Fixed lines respectively. SMS charges are a bit of a problem with local SMS being charged at Re.1. But one can always use the add-on packs and get 1000 free SMS by paying Rs.99. Overall the Plan works out just fine for Madhav and with 300 minutes of free calling he does not have to be shocked by heavy bills. He gives it a rating of 4 on 5.

Karan Rawat is currently using the BPL Loop 299 Plan. With the plan working for him, he wanted to share his experience with the other readers. The basic reason for him choosing the Plan was the low calling and SMS rates. With Karan making calls to all networks, calls at 40 paise worked well. Also the 300 minutes of free calling and SMS to BPL numbers always came handy.

Karan thinks that the lowest calling rate in the circle (10 paise to BPL users) was one of the best deals one could get. Even the SMS costs are quite low. Moving on to the Customer Care and Gallery Services, this BPL user has no problems. He only voices some problems of bad network sometimes.

Overall, Karan is quite satisfied with the performance of the Plan and recommends it to people who are existing BPL users. He rates it 4 on 5.

Ramakrishna Kamath is using Airtel Friendz ever since it was launched. Attracted to the cheap call rates and SMS, he planned to take it up. The positives according to him were the plan rates:

Positives: As for the other favorable aspects of the service provider, he really thinks that the GPRS deal is a good value for money. For a daily charge of Rs.15, the high download speeds of upto 25kbps make the deal a must buy. Another good thing is the provision of balance and call charges being displayed after every call.

Negatives: But there’s another side to it. He says that the customer care sucks big time and the service center employees aren’t well equipped with the knowledge required to help customers.

Network: As for the network, the reality defies what’s shown in the ad with bad network in rural areas and national highways.

Overall: With great call rates on one side and the bad service on the other side, Ramakrishna gives it a “good” with 3.5/5 rating.

Tackling a service provider can be cumbersome if they are unwilling to listen. Same is the case with one of our readers Shreya from Pune. Read on.

Till late 2006 I was using Hutch (now Vodafone) as my cellular service provider. But due to pathetic service offered by them I decided to switch to Airtel. So by November 2006 I was using Airtel and completed all the formalities required to surrender the connection. I thought I did everything right and won’t have to see Hutch again. But to my dismay, from mid 2007 I started receiving bills and was asked to pay up my dues. I visited the Gallery to get my matter sorted out and the executive there said to ignore the bills. Following the executive’s advice I started ignoring them but these Vodafone guys won’t leave me alone. Now they are calling up on my landline number and asking the same thing again and again. This is really irritating and is taking on my nerves. What should I do?

I can’t believe such a massive telecom company has a discrepancy in their database system where they don’t know who are their real customers? At one extreme, they encourage people to switch to e-bill which can save trees and at the other they send unsolicited bills to people who aren’t their customers now. Vodafone get your act right! Ok, so Shreya you don’t have to worry a bit if they ask you to pay the charges because legally speaking they do not have any right to do so. Their system generates the bill which the sleepy executives have forgotten to update. But if you’re still paranoid, you can contact the respective Nodal officer or Appellate Authority.

Discuss in our forums

I am an owner of a handset with Reliance connection. About 1 month back I subscribed to a Cricket day SMS pack which is worth Rs. 5/- per match day i.e. whenever the match is telecast on TV on that day Rs. 5 will be deducted from my prepaid balance.

Now comes the most pathetic thing about Reliance Mobile. According to the Reliance Customer Care and Reliance Web World, currently I do not have any pack activated (as visible in their records). But then also whenever match is telecast I get the score update SMS and Rs. 5 is deducted. Now I live on a zero rupee balance because whenever I try to recharge balance becomes 0.

Since 1 month I have registered 5 complaints but still there is no solution to the problem but a fake assurance. I think that this problem is purely a technical problem (problem with database server) and the technical team of Reliance which deals with these problems is highly unskillful.

So I request every Reliance Mobile User not to subscribe to any scheme of Reliance as u can also go through the same problem like I did.

Sanchit, dealing problems with operator is a real pain in the a**. Even I have gone through this but maybe contacting a higher authority would help. Just like this guy did to solve his Vodafone woes.

Starting off with the general perception about the service provider, Mr. Duggal is satisfied with the service being provided to him, but what frustrates him the most is that there are network problems at his residence. Initially, a user of BPL mobile he later shifted to Hutch thinking he would get good network coverage at his place. But the network problem still exists even with Hutch. So just in case some person from Hutch is reading this, please take note of it. Now the main reasons behind choosing this plan were that he could get 1000 minutes of talk time and an equal number of SMS’s free. He is a hardcore SMS junkie and says that he has to pay additional 30 bucks so that he can get the rest of the messages charged at 10 paise.

He also pointed out that he has a problem with the SMS thingy as he can’t figure out how many SMS’s he has sent and how many are remaining. He appreciates the due date provided by Hutch for paying his monthly bills. When asked about how would he rate the service centers, he said that the closest to him is the Irla Customer Care and is always crowded and thus he prefers not visiting it. As for the call assist, he doesn’t use such facility and prefers to solve such problems himself. Overall he has no major issues and happily lives with the pug aka Hutch.
