The Private Indian telecom companies are keen on expanding their geographies. We saw them inclining for deals in South Africa, Nepal, Sri Lanka etc. Now, the public based telecom operators too are seen to be interested in foreign territories. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd operating in the Indian regions of Mumbai and Delhi has expressed interest to buy a stake in Zambian telecom firm Zamtel. “We have signed the non-disclosure agreement,” MTNL Chairman R.S.P. Sinha said.

State-run Zamtel is the leading telecom operator in Zambia. The company provides a modern Internet service through Zamtel On-line and is Zambia’s only licensed fixed-line provider of voice and data communications. The state plans to sell up to 75 per cent in it as part of a privatisation drive. Zamtel’s revenue for the year ended December 2008 were $100 million.

MTNL Mumbai has reinitiated its Loyalty Program with a new bait for the existing customers. Existing Trump/Dolphin/landline users can now avail a free Lifetime Trump prepaid connection. The free card will give a talktime of Rs. 20 along with the lifetime validity. The user can get a free connection by submitting the prerequisite documents at MTNL Area Service Centres only.

Procedure:

Existing Dolphin postpaid, MTNL Landline and Garuda customers can make a request for the Free Trump Lifetime Prepaid card by the Trump CAF with two Photograph, One Photo Identity proof and copy of producing their last paid bill. There should not be any outstanding amount in their account except the last bill if within due date.

Existing Trump prepaid customers can fill the Trump CAF and submit the Photo and Documentary proof as per existing regulations.

We Say: In few words, pretty smart move to inflate subscribers. But we wonder had not been there any loyalty program, how many organic subscribers would it garner?

All of the above given plans do not come anywhere close to providing good value for money. We personally feel that no one would like to opt for these plans given their price. Also, the free usage being offered with the plans: 500 KB and 1MB is definitely very strange. This is what we call as being truly MTNL (if that’s a typo!). Also the 30-50p per KB data charge will surely get your pockets empty.

Overall, the plans are a complete disaster and we hope they are modified soon.

TeleGyaan recently brought you a post on BSNL coming out with Blackberry services in April. Now it’s the other public operators turn to offer the same. Yes, MTNL announced the launch of Blackberry services in Delhi yesterday. The service will be made available through MTNL’s postpaid arm – Dolphin.

As for the phone, the operator will be selling the Blackberry Bold as a part of its initial offerings. Also the operator is trying to take due advantage of the 3G spectrum, by offering this 3G enabled phone. This will give both the operators an edge over others. Along with the above phone, MTNL will also be offering Blackberry Curve 8310/20 and Blackberry 8700. The prices of these handsets are:

Blackberry Bold: Rs. 34,000

Blackberry Curve 8310/8320: Rs.24,000

Blackberry 8700G: Rs.14,000

We Say: Reiterating the fact, the two public operators will have an edge over other players as they will be offering the Blackberry service along with 3G to users. However, it solely depends on the plans being offered by MTNL and BSNL.

State owned MTNL had plans to span its wings all across India for which it had submitted a proposal to the DoT. However, the Telecom body turned down this proposal. MTNL has its operations in Mumbai and Delhi and BSNL, the other state owned telco has its foothold all across India except these two circles. The ministry would not like to see two state run players fighting it out in the same circle, which is why the decision could have been taken.

However, ailing MTNL says that the decision will not affect its business much. This might not be the case as Mumbai and Delhi are among the most saturated circles. The operator says that it would like to further strengthen its foothold in the two markets.

MTNL officially becomes the first operator in India to launch commercial 3G services in the Delhi region. However, having the first mover advantage, MTNL is trying to cash in by setting the price a bit higher that would deprive many to enjoy the 3G advantages. Remember, 3G network operates on a totally different band and provides faster data speeds as well as good voice quality.

Tariff:
Activation charge: Rs.500 + service tax
Fixed charges: Rs.599/- per month
Voice call to own network: Rs.0.60 per minute
Calls to other network: Rs. 1.00 per minute
Video call own network: Rs.1.80 per minute
Video call other network: Rs. 3.00 per minute
STD/ISD: As per Budget plan
STD video call: Rs.3.75 per minute
ISD video call: Rs. 30/- per minute
Local/STD/ISD SMS: As per Budget plan
Data @ GPRS/3G/UMTS/HSDPA usage rate: Rs.5/- per MB
Data @ HSDPA monthly service charges: Rs.149/-
MMS: Rs.3/-
HSDPA card (Optional): Rs.5000/-

We Say: As mentioned above, with such high charges, many won’t be jumping in the 3G bandwagon soon. Major letdown in this scheme is the fixed monthly charge which a user has to pay irrespective of his usage and on top of it his monthly rental plan. Though the voice call rates, video calls, SMS and MMS are fairly priced, the fixed HSDPA charges and the insane usage rate of Rs. 5 per MB are a downer.

We are not comparing 3G benefits but price alone can kill 3G’s excitement. If you’re thinking of taking the plunge, we would advice you to hold back for sometime as competition could lower the price.
