Tata Docomo’s GSM service in Kolkata

Last week saw Kolkata getting its sixth GSM operator – Tata Docomo. The operator is already present in 10 circles which include Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Orissa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh and Haryana. We bring you a peep into its prepaid offering in Kolkata –

TATA DOCOMO PREPAID

The prepaid starter kit costs Rs 49 and comes with lifetime validity and zero free airtime on pack.
All local calls can be made at the rate of 1 paisa/sec.
All STD calls can be made at the rate of 2 paise/sec (however, as an inaugural scheme the operator is currently offering STD at the rate 1 paisa/sec which is applicable for the first 15 min of STD usage for the day and subsequently users will be charged 2 paise/sec).
Local, National and International SMSes are charged at 60 paise, Rs 1.2 and Rs 5 respectively (however, again as an inaugural scheme the operator will only charge you for the first 2 SMS of the day and thereafter the user can avail 100 Local or National SMSes free for the day).
GPRS can be used without paying any rental at the rate of 1 paise/kb on the home network.

Tata Docomo is also offering two Special tariff vouchers for users with special requirements. The first voucher is priced at Rs 25 and will offer calls across home network at 1 paisa/2 secs i.e. equivalent to 30 paise/min. The second voucher is priced at Rs 14 and will offer night calling (11 pm to 7am) across home network at 1 paisa/5 secs i.e. equivalent to 12 paise/min. Both vouchers will be valid for a month and call can be made across Tata Docomo, Tata Indicom and Virgin Mobile. This is a limited period offer and will be valid till 30^th October 2009.

Samsung launches Galaxy (I7500), strikes a deal with Tata Docomo

Samsung today announced its first Android-powered phone in India dubbed as the Galaxy (I7500). Measuring just 11.9mm thick, the phone packs a vivid 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display along with full 7.2Mbps HSDPA, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, 5 megapixel camera, 8GB internal memory, microSD slot (up to 32GB) and a nice 1500mAh battery. The phone also comes pre-installed with Google services like Search, YouTube, Gmail, Maps and Android Market that will allow users to download new apps on to the phone.

Samsung also announced an exclusive offer for Tata Docomo users. For the first six months, Tata Docomo users will be eligible for a 500MB data access per month (and if you exhaust it before the month, there’s always an unlimited pack to the rescue).

The phone will sell for Rs. 28,990.

Tata Docomo launches unlimited GPRS packs

With the proliferation of social networking sites and to satisfy user’s urge to remain online 24×7, Tata Docomo has announced unlimited GPRS packs. The packs are similar to Aircel’s Pocket Internet that were launched few months ago. A user can opt for a 3-day pack costing Rs. 15 or go for a full month of unlimited freedom for just Rs. 95. However, there’s one important thing to know. These packs won’t work on roaming. In simple words, you’ll be able to access the internet but will be charged 10p/10kb.

Activating the GPRS pack is simple. Go to a retailer to recharge your account with the GPRS voucher and then SMS INTERNET to 52270 to receive the settings. Likewise, you can also set the settings manually. More on that here.

And yes, you can connect the phone to your laptop or desktop PC to surf the internet but with the speeds hovering up to 48Kbps, this doesn’t sound to be a good option.

Tata Docomo launches diet-sms – 1p/character SMS

Tata Docomo sent some shivers to the ‘established’ GSM operators when they launched 1paisa per second calling and now they’re trying to attempt the same by announcing diet-sms that charges 1paisa per character excluding the spaces. Sounds too good to be true, right? In fact, it is but there are a few things to note before you jump with joy.

Firstly, as the “Diet-sms” name implies, this service is useful for short messages. Very short messages. A person’s diet message is capped to just 15 characters, which means the maximum a person can be charged for a diet-sms is 15 paise.

A Tata Docomo user cannot send an under 15 character message and infer that he’ll be charged on the diet-sms rates. He needs to send it to a special short code number that transcribes the text and then sends it to the recipient. I’m not sure how Tata DoCoMo handles this but if there are a lot of messages waiting to be transcribed, your message maybe queued up that could cause a delay.

A user can send a diet-sms via three ways:

Go to the SIM-based menu on the phone (called Dive-in Now), scroll to the diet-sms option under the English Language menu, open it and send the SMS; or

TATA DOCOMO has also launched a phone application which can be downloaded from TATA DOCOMO ‘Dive In’ wap portal, or by simply sending a SMS “diet” to 54321. Using this diet-sms application, the customer can send short text messages easily; or

TATA DOCOMO customers can also send a diet-sms using the normal SMS menu. They need to type the mobile number followed by a space followed by the message and sms this to the short code 52208

We Say: It’s a good concept and it will be interesting to see how other operators take it up. The most intriguing part I felt is that Tata is offering different ways to send a shorter short message, off which the standalone application holds true potential. Tata can easily plaster ads on the app, give them free diet-texts every day and they’ll be more than happy to view the ads. In fact, this is how SMS 2.0 of Airtel should’ve been. But hey, that’s a story for another day.

Tata DoCoMo brings SMS Offer in Kerala

If Tata DoCoMo’s 1paise/sec is a boon for heavy callers, they’ve come out with another offer to please avid texters. Launched in Kerala, the SMS offer will allow users to enjoy 100 local and national SMS everyday for free. The only catch here, which we think is a reasonable one is that the user needs to send a message to a local or national number that will be charged at 60 paise and Rs. 1.20 respectively. The offer is applicable to pre-paid users and will be valid till November 25.

We Say: Tata DoCoMo is trying every ploy to take on the competition and needless to say, such a scheme will enable them to add more connections. Let’s hope they roll this offer in other circles too.

This just in. NTT DOCOMO who owns a 26 percent stake in Tata Teleservices have announced a name and branding of Tata’s GSM service. It will be known as Tata DOCOMO and will launch its services in southern India this month. They also have a website which will apparently be accessible after 1PM IST.
