Unitech is all set to launch its GSM services in December this year under the brand ‘Uninor’ and it has finalised on Nokia Siemens Networks to be its network and infrastructure partner. It will initiate its services in six circles which will include Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Nokia Siemens Networks will also be responsible for network operations and maintenance as a part of the Managed Services contract with Uninor.

Stein Erik Vellan, Managing Director, Uninor stated that, “We are creating a new global telecom model. We call it the Telco of the Next Decade that leverages existing competencies in the market to drive cost and time efficiencies, superior quality and flexibility that future proofs our operations in a rapidly changing competitive environment. Our partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks will help us pursue our unique model in these six circles as well.”

Nokia Siemens Network intends to make use of its Flexi BTS platform to make mobile base stations. NSN claims that this technology will let it bring in the industry’s smallest and most energy-efficient mobile base station.  NSN will also offer consultation and network design services to ensure smooth interlinking with Uninor’s existing infrastructure.

Unitech Wireless today announced their new identity and will now be known as Uninor. The revamped brand name is indicative of Telenor’s global telecom expertise which has a major stake in the company and Unitech Ltd. that has presence in the country.

Uninor is expected to launch its services by end of this year and with the new identity in place, they’re emphasizing on putting customers and employees first. Whatever their way will be, they claim to bring in new ideas and new ways of doing business, which I think will be interesting to see.

As for their operation status, Uninor has got a pan-India license with spectrum already allotted for 21 of the 22 circles. The service will be live by December in select markets.

Unitech which planned its foray in the Indian telecom circuit last December is all set to launch its mobile services by the end of this year. Unitech Wireless in which Norway’s Telenor has a 67% stake has managed to attain wireless spectrum to operate in 21 of India’s 22 telecom circles. World’s fastest growing wireless market is rapidly adding up competition year after year.

Considering the specifics of the allocation, the operator has been allocated 4.4 MHz of spectrum in the 1,800 MHz GSM band, which has chalked out plans to launch services by mid-09. The company is currently arranging finances to start up operations in full swing.
