Airtel, along with Affle, has launched SMS 2.0, regarded as the world’s first upgrade to SMS. Affle being the inventor of this technology is a leading mobile media company that currently operates out of India in Singapore, Thailand, UK, and USA. Airtel claims to be the first telecom service provider in the country to offer this innovative service to its 55 million customers.
SMS 2.0 is unique because it combines messaging, content display and contextual advertising into one application that serves as the default SMS application on the customers mobile handset.
SMS 2.0 enables an interactive platform on mobile phones that would allow Airtel users to discover relevant content services with enhanced messaging features. SMS 2.0’s enhanced options include additional features like composing and sending messages with a variety of text, background colors, and emoticons.
The content displayed along with the messaging function includes user-relevant content such as news, jokes, movie updates, Cricket, Astrology, etc — all integrated into the messaging experience.
SMS 2.0 is available as a ‘free upgrade’ to the regular SMS application; Airtel subscribers can download SMS 2.0 by sending “SMS2” to 543210. There are no charges for downloading this application or for content delivery during the use of this application. SMS 2.0 is expected to be a breakthrough technology and would certainly replace the conventional way of messaging.
