BPL partners with Mumbai Police

November 29, 2008 By Rohan Kamath Leave a Comment

BPL Mobile along with Hyderabad based IMImobile has partnered with the Mumbai Police to make Mumbai roads safer. This is being done through a service, currently being used by the Mumbai Police to book cases of drinking and driving.

The service: The mobile based service helps the cops identify people who have already been caught and penalised for such cases, by just SMSing the license number of the person’s car to a confidential number. Through this system, the cops can take strict action against people who have been charged for the same more than once. Also, the records can be updated at the same time, thus making it more cop-friendly.

According to the officials, this service has helped them considerably, especially with its prompt response. It is believed that the service will help make Mumbai roads a lot more safer.

We Say: On one hand BPL is trying to fulfill its share of responsibility and at the same time setting an awesome example to other operators. We hope to see the others follow with similar steps.

September 26, 2008 By Rohan Kamath 4 Comments

With the festive season coming up, BPL Mobile has come up with festive benefits to woo new users. This one is called the Utsav Card and has been rolled out for people joining the BPL family. Here are the details:

  • Cost: Rs.201
  • 3 year validity
  • Calls to BPL mobiles: 20paise
  • Calls to other lines: 70paise
  • STD calls: Rs.1.25
  • Local and National SMS: 30paise
  • Night calling to BPL: 10paise
  • Night calling to others: 40paise
  • STD calls: 90paise
  • Local and National SMS: 15paise
We say: According to us, this plan should be prefered by most new users. The reason is the low calling rates across both calls and SMSes to non-BPL numbers. Also, people with STD calling, would prefer this over the existing prepaid plans given its low rates.

BPL Mobile users facing network problems

September 24, 2008 By Rohan Kamath 1 Comment

Recently, BPL Mobile users in Mumbai have been facing strange problems in sending SMSes. There have been complaints about the messages not reaching the person on the other end and also cases of the sender receiveing the delivery report without it being sent. Some users have been complaining about messages reaching them in bulk i.e. the messages that were sent to them during the day are recieved together in the night.

With BPL always being associated with bad network, the new problem has left the users quite harassed. As per one subscriber, their problems are not being addressed by the authorities, who claim about the absence of any problems. We would request you to come forward and let us know if you have faced such problems.

BPL introduces Mumbai Search

September 21, 2008 By Rohan Kamath 2 Comments

Need to book a ticket or get an appointment with Mumbai’s top hairstylist or want to eat authentic Chinese food in Mumbai… What do you do in such cases? Call JustDial... or (now) call BPL Mumbai search. This service, according to BPL can help you get details of almost anything by just dialing *111# from your BPL mobile.

Charges to call the number are free, but once you have selected the category you are searching for, you will be charged Rs.3 This service is also available on SMS: Just type in the details you need and send it across to 54000 and get the details SMSed on to your phone.

We say: The service would not be preferred by most as there is an already existing free service available to Mumbai residents. Also charging Rs.3 compared to the its free substitute takes away the chances of this service being used by people.

Customer Speak: BPL Prepaid

September 6, 2008 By Rohan Kamath Leave a Comment

In one of the posts, TeleGyaan blogged about the BPL Gallery – Andheri(W). We gave it a fair rating on its service, but one of our readers did not agree to what we said in the post.

This reader is Mr. Nilesh, who wanted to get a prepaid connection from the same gallery. His experience wasn’t great because of the reasons he gave us:

  • “I have sent all the documents, which were necessary to get the connection.
  • I received the Sim card
  • Two days later the connection was cut and a I got a request to submit the documents.”
This is a good example of Bad Service. We request readers to send us such queries and problems so that we can uncover such practices and have some say in the matter.
As for Nilesh, we would advice you to contact the Gallery and get the problem sorted. If you have already done that, and since it involves important papers, you could click here and get your complaint lodged.
