March 14, 2009 By Rohan Kamath Leave a Comment

In an attempt to fuel its expansion plans and make its presence felt in the Telecom market, Aircel has planned to inject $5bn into its business. This announcement came along with the operators expansion into the Hyderabad circle. Aircel is currently a part of Malaysia-based Maxis Communications Bhd and has a subscriber base of 17mn users.

Here’s what Aircel has planned:

  • The operator plans to invest $10bn into its operations this year.
  • $5bn is expected to be diverted into its Hyderabad operations.
  •  Aircel also plans to step foot in the northern belt – Delhi and UP as well as Maharashtra.
  • This will take the count to 18 circles by the end of next month.
  • The operator also has set optimistic goals of doubling its subscriber base by the end of the year.

We Say: The operator is being well backed by Maxis and has plans to expand in circles, which might help meet its objectives. Though doubling its user base might be difficult, it is never impossible. We can only wait and watch.

The ever increasing confusion and talks making the rounds in the Indian telecom landscape around the Tata Teleservices and NTT DoCoMo deal has reached an endpoint with the cabinet giving a thmbs-up to the deal. With the approval, DoCoMo will not face problems acquiring its proposed 27% stake in Tata Tele.

Apart from this, the Japanese giant also got approval to acquire about 20% odd stake in Tata Tele Maharashtra. This approval has led to the deal being one of the biggest one’s witnessed by the industry.

We Say: The increasing interest being shown by foriegn majors in the Indian telcos goes to show how tempting the subcontinent is with respect to telecom investment. Let’s hope the moolah keeps pouring in!!

DoT to make the best of now: More bidders for 3G auction

January 10, 2009 By Rohan Kamath Leave a Comment

In an attempt to make the best of the situation, theDoT might just allow more operators to bid for spectrum in the 3G auction. The body has decided that it would accomodate more operators in circles, in which additional capacities exist. These additional spots would help the government to get more money and, on the same hand, make the game more competitive.

Going into specifics, it was expected that the number of operatorswhich could be accomodated would be 2-4. However, it was found some more operators could fit into circles like Kolkata, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The new numbers making the rounds are 6-8, which means twice the competition.
