BSNL to offer Blackberry services from April

March 18, 2009 By Rohan Kamath 1 Comment

untitled1

State-owner telco – BSNL is expected to offer Blackberry services from April. This move would help the operator gain an edge over the others. Here’s how::

  • BSNL is one of the two operators offering 3G services in the country.
  • The other operators which provide Blackberry services, are in the queue to bid for 3G, which is not expected to take place soon…
  • Thus, lau, nching the service in April could give it a first-mover advantage in the Blackberry-3G zone.

However, the user base for the service is quite small and with Airtel and Vodafone providing ‘killer’ plans for Blackberry users, BSNL might just find it tough to compete against the private telcos. We expect BSNL to come up with some equally good plans to counter competition.

BlackBerry to strengthen its foothold in India

October 9, 2008 By Rohan Kamath Leave a Comment

With the Indian telecom market getting attractive by the day and users upgrading to better cellphones and services, RIM, which provides the BlackBerry cellphones has decided to expand its operations in India. The move comes close to the launch of the BlackBerry Storm that has been launched to combat the iPhone in India.

Currently the company has tie-ups with 5 operators in India and is eyeing more of such collaborations. The decision by RIM is justified by the increasing number of users witnessing a transformation in their needs and thus opting for better and more high-end services and handsets. It’s expansion plan has started rolling with the opening of a new office in Mumbai, which is witnessing strong growth.

Blackberry Bold unveiled in India

September 19, 2008 By Kunal Gangar Leave a Comment

Airtel, Vodafone and RCom have revealed their latest offering from their Blackberry portfolio. They will soon be selling RIM’s Blackberry flagship phone, Bold at a hefty price tag of Rs. 34,990. This is the best Blackberry phone to come out of RIM’s stable and if you’re not so price conscious then you might be able to pick it up from the end of this month, if you’re an Airtel or Vodafone customer or by end of October if you’re under RCom GSM service.

Week Round Up

July 6, 2008 By Kunal Gangar Leave a Comment

The previous week was a dry one. We started with Vodafone’s yet another corporate plan which was followed by Airtel’s postpaid scheme again limited to corporates. After all the hoopla government created to stop Blackberry services, they have now issued a statement that the world’s largest push-email service is safe to use. And finally a new service announced by MTNL which allows its customers to enjoy the benefits of TV on their GPRS enabled phones. The first month trial is free.

Weren’t we expecting this? Government has finally given RIM’s Blackberry services a clean chit and they can continue their services in India without any conditions. “There is no threat from BlackBerry services,” Telecoms Secretary Siddhartha Behura told reporters at an industry summit.

Go crackberry addicts. Go.

Week Round up

June 1, 2008 By Kunal Gangar Leave a Comment

This week was an interesting one. It started off with scrutinizing Vodafone’s moves which announced to its customers that the STD charges are further dropped as the same as MTNL. Later in the day, we informed about Virgin Mobile’s weekend recharge.

M-Commerce is very nascent at this stage in India. But BPL Mobile took a bold step of introducing it to its customers which is currently in collaboration with NGPay. Now this is something interesting from Vodafone. SMS them and you get a small but useful amount of recharge balance. Scheme is called as Chhota Credit and has some conditions to be fulfilled.

We have said this too many times before that MTNL is an underdog. And the reason they lack behind other operators is their inadequate marketing campaigns. But now a campaign is running across the city which is trying to turn the tables for the government owned operator. A new entrant in the market for international SIM cards is V-Tel. They claim to save up to 95% on roaming charges.

The tussle with the government and RIM is still not solved. In the latest release, they have denied to share the encryption key giving the deserved security to its customers. Brave move, I must say! We all know that Virgin Mobile is the only operator which pays you for incoming. So why not profit from it? Check out our analysis to earn yourself a decent income.

Reliance has announced their lifetime incoming plan will also be available for Rs. 299. And lastly it is BSNL who is ‘begging’ the government to allot free spectrum for WiMAX while the rest of the pack will play a hefty amount. This will cause a furor, if government allots them.

The story continues: BlackBerry security issues

May 29, 2008 By Kunal Gangar Leave a Comment

There’s a cat and mouse game going on between Research in Motion (RIM) and the Indian government. In a recent turnout after seeing the reactions of the public, RIM has withdrawn their statement that they’ll be sharing the encryption key with the government.

The latest news is that they are not going to share it and the reason cited by them is that they don’t have any access to encryption keys used by the customers. It is clear that RIM is trying save their face and is in a soup on which side to support for – customers or the government.

RIM will be meeting the officials today and let’s see what happens. We’ll keep you updated on this.

Week Round up

May 25, 2008 By Kunal Gangar Leave a Comment

The week started with a short review of Tata Indicom’s website which has got a worth looking makeover. Next article notified us about another 3G service provider in the form of MTNL. They will be providing services as soon as they are allotted the spectrum.

Security is gaining more and more importance. But it seems RIM is compromising it to continue itself selling BlackBerry services in India and would be sharing the encryption key with the government. Next article highlighted the fact that Orkut has become a hub for users to share the telecom secrets and discuss the loopholes enabling the users to enjoy free GPRS and other services.

Another security loophole: This time it comes from government owned MTNL. MTNL’s website clearly lags behind in this Web 2.0 age but a more depressing fact is that their website included details of their customers. We have notified the authorities and as per their feedback, the situation is in control.

Airtel launched the Dial a Postpaid plan which will help them to gain more postpaid customers by giving them exciting benefits. Airtel announced that they will be selling HTC’s Touch Diamond phone which is reckoned to give iPhone a run for its money. Airtel has the exclusive rights to sell the phone. The last dose of Airtel is that they have launched their services in Lakshadweep islands.

Tata Indicom had launched a prepaid plan known as Go Speak Life giving users the freedom to call at 49 paise. Definite Steal according to us for users clocking more local calls. And lastly comes the Videocon’s announcement of starting their telecom services by mid-August and South India would be the first ones to experience them.

DoT may read your mails sent from BlackBerry

May 21, 2008 By Kunal Gangar 2 Comments

The BlackBerry saga is expected to come to an end. The Canadian firm has agreed to share the decryption key with the DoT giving them the access to user’s confidential data. However, the condition put by RIM is that DoT should take full responsibility in case of user’s data get leaked.

We can say that RIM has smartly hit two birds with one stone. Firstly, they will continue to sell their services and secondly if in case any discrepancy happens, they will not be liable. This does not seem a good move clearly jeopardizing user’s privacy.
